　　1. Development，通常是用单数，不过表示“进展”或者多方面的发展时，会用复数。

　　He keeps his director posted (up) inthe developments of the experiment.

　　Scientists have to work hard to get abreast ofthe latest discoveries and developmentsin their field.科学家必须努力工作才能与他们研究领域中的最新发现和进展并驾齐驱。《21世纪大英汉词典》

　　2. Service

　　① 表示一种“公共服务系统”时，一般是单数形式，两个以上的系统，用复数。例如 The postal servicehas been trying to cut costs.

　　邮政系统一直在试图削减成本。

　　We have started a campaign forbetter nursery and school services.

　　我们已开展了一场运动，以改善幼儿园和学校的服务。

　　②表示机构或者公司提供的抽象服务，一般是单数形式；表示专业人士提供的服务，往往是复数形式。

　　If an organization or company providesa particular service, they can do a particular job or a type of work for you.（柯林斯词典）

　　Your servicesare the things that you do or the skills that you use in your job, which other people find useful and are usually willing to pay you for.（柯林斯词典）

　　The kitchen maintains a twenty-four hour service and can be contacted via reception.

　　厨房提供24小时服务，可通过接待处联系。

　　I have obtained the services of a top photographer to take our pictures.

　　我得到了一位顶级摄影师的服务。

　　③ 表示服务行业时，一般用复数。这里也可以顺便再强调下，服务业并不都是要再加个 sector 或 industry

　　Servicesare activities such as tourism, banking, and selling thingswhich are part of a country's economy, but are not concerned with producing or manufacturing goods. 服务性工作; 服务性行业 （柯林斯词典）

　　Mining rose by 9.1%, manufacturing by 9.4% andservices by 4.3%.

　　采矿业增长了9.1%，制造业增长了9.4%，服务业增长了4.3%。

　　3. Infrustructure（基础设施） 通常是单数形式，但是在英语新闻中复数形式也常有见到。韦氏在线词典也出了一种复数的用法，例如 town/city infrastructures。

　　They like that idea better than trying to integrate Apple devices into theirexisting infrastructures.（FORBES: Google Can't Have It Both Ways）

　　Solutions are designed to protectIT infrastructuresfrom unauthorized access without compromising operational effectiveness. （FORBES: Magazine Article）

　　4. Customs海关，一定是复数形式，单数意义。

　　Customs is the placewhere people arriving from a foreign country have to declare goods that they bring with them.

　　What right does Customs have to search my car?

　　海关有什么权力搜查我的车？

　　5. Communication 作为“通讯”一门事业或一个行业，必须用复数形式communications

　　【例】With the development of the Internet, communications are being revolutionized at a dizzying speed. 随着互联网的发展，通讯事业正在以令人眼花目眩的速度进行着革命化。
